Protest against fabricated trials

The Committee for the Summer Olympic Games 2008 in a Free and Democratic Country wishes to lodge a protest about the increasing number of fabricated trials in People’s Republic of China whereby the Chinese authorities abuse the international community’s struggle against terrorism.

Primarily, the Committee is seriously shocked by the conviction and execution of Lobsang Dhondup, and the sentence to death of Tenzin Deleg Rinpoche, suspended for two years.

From the information available to the Committee it is clear that both defendants were refused a fair and independent trial.

Another case breaching international standards of fair trial is the life sentence passed on one of the chief leaders of the Chinese exile opposition, Wang Ping-chan. This defender of human rights has become a victim of the repressive Chinese regime under suspicious and unclear circumstances.

The Committee for the Summer Olympic Games 2008 in a Free and Democratic Country aims through its activities to reach a position where the international community can welcome the organisation of the Olympic Games in China with an easy and clear conscience. The Committee fears that the opportunity the Chinese government has been given – that is, to transform its country into a democratic society – is being proved futile by these unprecedented acts.

The Committee will take all possible steps in the international field leading not only to the clarification by the Chinese authorities of all the circumstances relevant to the cases mentioned, but also to the immediate release of all political prisoners in China, and to the relegation of such unacceptable methods to the past.
